Quick Answer: Google Search Console (GSC) is Google's free tool that shows you how Google sees, crawls, and ranks your website. The four reports that matter most: Performance (what queries bring you traffic, your CTR and position), Pages/Coverage (what Google has indexed and what it has not), Core Web Vitals (how your pages perform on mobile), and Links (what external sites link to you). GSC is the most underused tool in SEO. Most users check clicks and impressions and leave it there. The full tool is a diagnostic system for every dimension of how Google sees your site.

Every Melbourne business with a website should have Google Search Console set up.

Most do not. And of those that do, most only look at traffic numbers.

That is like buying a car with a full diagnostic system and only ever checking the speedometer.

This guide covers what GSC actually shows you and the specific workflows that produce SEO results.

Setting Up Google Search Console

Go to search.google.com/search-console. Click 'Add property.' Choose 'Domain' (covers all versions of your URL) or 'URL prefix' (covers one specific version).

Verification options:

  • DNS record: Add a TXT record to your domain. Recommended, covers all subdomains and protocols.
  • HTML file: Download and upload a file to your site root. Works on any platform.
  • HTML tag: Add a meta tag to your homepage's head section. Yoast and Rank Math handle this automatically.
  • Google Analytics: If GA4 is already installed with the same Google account, verification is automatic.

After verification, submit your sitemap. In the left menu: Indexing > Sitemaps. Enter your sitemap URL (typically yourdomain.com.au/sitemap.xml) and click Submit.

The Performance Report: Your Most Important SEO Data

MetricWhat it meansWhat to look for
ClicksTimes someone clicked your resultGrowing month on month = traffic improving
ImpressionsTimes your pages appeared in searchHigh impressions, low clicks = title tag problem
CTR% of impressions that become clicksBelow 2% = title and meta needs improvement
Average positionWhere your pages rank on averagePositions 4-15 = close to page 1, push them

The most valuable workflow in GSC: find pages with high impressions and low CTR.

The high-impressions, low-CTR workflow 1. Open Performance > Search results 2. Click the Pages tab 3. Sort by Impressions (highest first) 4. Look for pages with 500+ impressions but below 2% CTR 5. Click the page to see which queries it appears for 6. Rewrite the title tag and meta description to be more compelling This is one of the highest-ROI SEO tasks available. The ranking work is done. A better title tag is all it takes to get the clicks.

A 2025 study by Launchcodex found this single workflow consistently improves CTR on underperforming pages within 4 to 6 weeks of implementation.

The Coverage/Pages Report: What Google Has and Has Not Indexed

Google Search Console coverage statuses and what each means

Search queryBuyer intent
Indexed (good)In Google's index, eligible to rank
Discovered, not yet crawledGoogle knows it exists, hasn't visited yet
Crawled, currently not indexedGoogle visited but decided not to index
Excluded by noindexIntentional or accidental noindex tag
Duplicate, canonical conflictTwo pages competing for same URL
Not found (404)Page deleted or URL changed

Priority order for fixing coverage issues:

  • 'Excluded by noindex' on pages you want indexed: Remove the noindex tag. This is the most critical error, your pages cannot rank if they are blocked.
  • Canonical conflicts: Add or fix self-referencing canonical tags. The page with the canonical wins; the duplicate gets ignored.
  • 'Crawled, currently not indexed': Content quality issue. Improve the page substantially before requesting indexing.
  • 'Discovered, not yet crawled': Usually a crawl budget issue on newer domains. Build more internal links to these pages and request indexing via URL Inspection.

URL Inspection: Diagnosing Individual Pages

The URL Inspection tool is how you check the status of a specific page. Type any URL from your site into the search bar at the top of GSC. It shows:

  • Whether the page is indexed
  • When Google last crawled it
  • Which canonical URL Google chose (may differ from the one you set)
  • Mobile usability status for that specific page
  • Any structured data detected and validated
  • A 'Test Live URL' option to see what Googlebot sees right now

After fixing a technical issue on a page, use URL Inspection > Test Live URL > Request Indexing to ask Google to recrawl it. You can submit up to 10 URL inspection requests per day.

Core Web Vitals Report: Mobile Performance

Experience > Core Web Vitals shows how your pages perform on LCP, INP, and CLS using real Chrome user data.

Critical detail: this report uses field data (real user experience) not lab data (simulated). A page can score 95 in PageSpeed Insights and still show 'Poor' in GSC if real-world conditions differ.

Filter by mobile. Google uses mobile scores for ranking decisions. A failing mobile CWV report is a direct ranking signal issue.

  • Top linked pages: Which of your pages have the most external backlinks. These are your highest-authority pages. Link from them to pages you want to rank.
  • Top linking sites: Which external websites link to you most. Check for quality.
  • Top anchor text: What text other sites use when linking to you. Heavily repeated exact-match anchor text can trigger over-optimisation signals.
  • Internal links: How many internal links each page receives. Pages with zero internal links are orphans.

The Monthly GSC Routine

  • Check Performance > Pages for new high-impression, low-CTR pages and update their title tags
  • Check Coverage for any new 'Not indexed' or 'Crawled, not indexed' pages and investigate the cause
  • Check Core Web Vitals for any pages newly flagged as 'Poor' on mobile
  • Check Manual Actions (Security and Manual Actions section), a manual penalty here is an emergency that needs immediate attention

Pair GSC with Google Analytics 4 for the full picture: GSC shows how people find you, GA4 shows what they do when they arrive.
