Quick Answer: A backlink is a link from one website to another. When another website links to yours, it signals to Google that your content is credible enough to reference. Backlinks are one of Google's top three ranking signals. The page ranking #1 on Google has on average 3.8 times more backlinks than pages in positions 2 through 10. For Australian businesses, the most accessible starting points are business directory submissions, industry association listings, and asking existing clients for a credit link.

PageRank. Domain authority. Link juice.

The SEO industry wraps backlinks in jargon that makes them sound complicated.

They are not.

A backlink is a vote of confidence from one website to another. The more votes you have from credible sites, the more Google trusts yours.

Google can read your content. It can crawl your website structure. What it cannot do is directly verify whether your business is genuinely trustworthy.

Backlinks are the proxy Google uses for that.

The logic: if 40 real Australian websites link to your plumbing business, that is 40 third-party endorsements Google can measure. It is harder to fake than anything you say about yourself on your own website.

Good backlinkBad backlink
From a real website with real readersFrom a site that exists only to sell links
Topically relevant to your industry or locationCompletely unrelated to your business
Each link from a different domainHundreds of links from the same IP network
Earned or legitimately requestedBought in a bulk package
From a site with domain rating above 30From a site with DR under 10 and no traffic
Natural, contextual anchor textOver-optimised exact-match anchor text on every link

The quality distinction matters more in 2026 than it did 5 years ago. Google's spam detection is more sophisticated. A hundred low-quality links are worth less than three links from credible Australian publications.

Note on pricing The average cost of a single quality backlink in 2026 is approximately $508.95 (Editorial.link survey of 500 SEO professionals). Any package offering 50 links for $299 is not selling quality links.

  • Domain Rating (DR) or Domain Authority (DA): A score from 0 to 100 indicating how authoritative the linking site is. A link from Yellow Pages AU (DA 72) outweighs a link from a newly created blog (DA 5).
  • Topical relevance: A link from Master Plumbers Australia to a Melbourne plumber passes more topical authority than a link from a cooking blog to the same plumber.
  • Placement: Links within the main body content carry more weight than footer links or sidebar links.
  • Australian business directories: Yellow Pages AU (DA 72), True Local (DA 64), Yelp AU (DA 60), Hotfrog, StartLocal. Free to submit. Takes 2 hours total. Creates 5 to 6 immediate backlinks from high-authority Australian domains.
  • Industry association directories: Master Plumbers Australia, Master Electricians Australia, ADA (dentists), CPA Australia (accountants), Law Institute of Victoria.
  • Client footer links: Ask satisfied clients to add a 'Proudly serviced by [Your Business]' credit in their website footer with a link. One link from a real Melbourne business in your industry outweighs 20 generic directory links.
  • Supplier and vendor websites: If you stock specific brands or are an authorised dealer, contact the manufacturer and ask to be listed on their 'find a stockist' page.

74% of SEOs believe backlinks influence AI search visibility, but only 19% have changed how they build links in response (Reporter Outreach State of Link Building 2026).

Sites with higher domain authority and more referring domains appear more frequently in AI-generated search answers. ChatGPT's citation patterns follow established domain authority signals closely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all backlinks helpful?

No. Low-quality, irrelevant, or spammy links can actively hurt your rankings. If you suspect you have toxic links, use Google's Disavow tool to ask Google to ignore specific links. Use this cautiously.

Is buying backlinks against Google's rules?

Yes. Buying links that pass PageRank is a violation of Google's link spam policies. If detected, it can trigger a manual penalty that can suppress a site for 12 to 24 months. Legitimate link building takes longer but carries no risk.
